Job description

Job Purpose:
Directly manage and coordinate the activities of the machine shop and the employees working in the shop to ensure effective use of equipment and machinery thereby meeting client requirements; and
Demonstrate thorough working knowledge and proven ability of all phases and types of machining applications and methods and recognized industry standards.
Carry out a range of mechanical work on machines, sub-assemblies and manufactured parts using a range of processes, tools, and machines with precision

Responsibilities / Duties / Job Skills:
·         Assign tasks and targets to personnel in the machine shop in close cooperation with the supervisor (subject to workload, project requirements and company requirements)
·         Assign personnel (based on their qualifications, abilities, and experience) to tasks to meet the deadlines of ongoing projects
·         Record operation workers' attendance and hours worked daily on Company timesheet, complete comments regarding absence from work and sign timesheet off on a weekly basis. Notify Manager of absence immediately.
·         Direct and coordinate daily activities of machine shop employees, ensuring that personnel are informed of the technical, quality and safety requirements of the activities that they have been tasked to performed.
·         Advise management of training requirements and skills levels of personnel
·         Be familiar with company disciplinary code in order to discipline operation workers who fail to adhere to company procedures or intentionally want to bring the company name in disrepute.
·         Assist with the assessment, mentoring, training, counselling and motivation of machine shop personnel
·         Plan production ahead and control stock in order to ensure that work can be carried out
·         On receipt, inspect materials, products and equipment to detect defects or malfunctions, make sure products delivered correlates with what was purchased and record batch numbers of consumables, ensuring product validity, control storage and certification of consumables
·         Follow up on production activities and identify any shortcomings and possible problems
·         Supervise the servicing, maintenance and repair of machine shop as instructed
·         Make recommendations for equipment upgrades, improvements and optimization
·         Dismantle faulty tools and assemblies and repair or replace defective parts
·         Ensure that daily housekeeping is performed by personnel, in and outside the Machine Shop
·         Examine detailed drawings or specifications to identify job, material and equipment requirements
·         Estimate project costs and submit quotations to internal and external clients as per requirements.
·         Set up and adjust metalworking machines and equipment accurately
·         Operate machines to produce parts or tools by turning, boring, milling, planning, shaping, slotting, grinding or drilling metal stock or

Knowledge / Qualifications / Experience:

Trade tested red seal Fitter & Turner
6-10 years’ experience in a supervisory capacity directly related to the production tasks practiced within
 the Company (manufacturing/fabrication experience)

Structural steel specifications
Estimations – steel fabrication drawings
Ability to read and understand machining drawings
Fully computer literate
